The Cyclorama & History Museum
History buffs have a lot to look forward to on a visit to Atlanta, and they can start with the Atlanta History Museum in Grant Park.
The star of the museum is the 358-foot long oil painting (largest in the U.S.!) depicting the Battle of Atlanta during the U.S. Civil War, looping around the room - one of only three Cycloramas in the country. Joining it is an elaborate 30-foot 3D diorama, added in 1936 (fun fact: one of the soldiers is modeled after Clark Gable - try to find him!). And then there's the centerpiece: the steam locomotive Texas, which played a key role in the great Locomotive Chase of 1862.
Zoo Atlanta
Atlanta‘s historic zoo is celebrating its 125th birthday this year in historic Grant Park. Not bad for something that started as a motley group of animals abandoned by a bankrupt traveling show and put up for auction!
But since it opened its doors in April 1889, Zoo Atlanta has thrived as an essential attraction of the city. It hosts an impressive assortment of animals, from A (African Elephant) to Z (for Zebra, naturally!).
“What“ll ya have?” is a question you'll hear shouted at you if you visit The Varsity, one of Atlanta’s oldest and most famous burger joints.
The Varsity’s downtown Atlanta location boasts the title of World’s Largest Drive-In, able to accommodate 600 cars and over 800 people inside. And they’re no stranger to volume: on days when the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are playing a home game, over 30,000 people visit.
Atlanta is the proud home of Coca-Cola, and that pride is on full display at the mammoth World of Coca-Cola museum devoted to the soft drink’s history.
After a brief animated introduction, visitors are welcome to roam the halls, learning more about the soda’s history (such as John Pemberton's original secret formula, and a vintage manual bottle-capping machine), some of its more notable achievements (including a zero-gravity soda dispense that flew aboard the Shuttle Discovery), and even its occasional missteps (New Coke hasn't been forgotten, it seems).
Centennial Park
If you’re done with the conference for the day, head over to Centennial Park, former home to the 1996 Olympics and current favorite gathering spot for the city’s residents.
The beautiful 22-acre park is a perfect spot for visitors, with plenty of sights, sounds and flavors waiting to be experienced.
Gone With the Wind
Atlanta visitors have the opportunity to explore practically every facet of Scarlett and Rhett’s story, thanks to tours and exhibits located throughout the city, including:
- The Margaret Mitchell House: Come visit the house where the Pulitzer-prize winning novel Gone With the Wind was born (pictured above).
- Tours of the three-story Tudor – which Mitchell affectionately referred to as “The Dump” – are offered throughout the day.
- The Marrietta Gone with the Wind Museum: A mainstay of downtown Marrietta since it opened in 2003, the museum features and extensive collection of memorabilia, including the honeymoon gown worn by Vivian Leigh in the film!

While other companies may contact you offering housing and discounts, they are not endorsed by or affiliated with DRI2016. Be careful when entering into a financial agreement with any unofficial companies, as their legitimacy and policies may be questionable and neither the Hyatt Regency Atlanta nor show management will be able to provide a resolution to issues related to such reservations.
